More than £41 million of fraudulent benefit claims and
overpayments were detected in 1998 under the Audit Commission's
national fraud initiative.
The first report looking at the progress made by council and
other bodies in detecting fraudulent claims reveals that detected
fraud rose from £15 million in 1997 to £41 million in
1998.
