The government is backing moves to break up ‘benefit ghettos’ in Sheffield by promoting mixed housing developments with owner-occupier and rented properties on the same estate.

The first of 33 homes to be built on a new two-dwelling estate in Sheffield’s Park ward will be built for the North British Housing Association to rent. Future building is to be clusters of about 20 homes of mixed private and rented accommodation.

The long-term aim is to create a cyber village where home computers link to a community centre with workshops, training and leisure facilities.
