The Department of Health has denied reports that it plans to cede more responsibility for social care to the NHS.
A story out today says
that health secretary Andy Burnham will shortly publish a policy paper
on the future vision for health policy, which will include proposals to
give the health service much greater involvement in social care.
Under consideration is a plan to hand control of and funding for social care to primary care trusts, it is claimed.
However a DH spokeswoman said there would be a new policy paper but this would not include any plans to hand over control and funding of social care to the NHS.
She said: "We will shortly be publishing a new strategy for a preventative, people-centred and productive NHS."
An NHS insider said there had been rumours circulating for a while and such an idea would answer the need for more integrated working between the NHS and social care, though there would be pros and cons.
More to come later from Community Care.
