The Alzheimer's society has signed an undertaking with the Information Commissioner to train their staff in data security following the loss of several unencrypted and unlocked laptops which contained personal information last summer.
The charity is undertaking to train all staff in the protection of data and encrypt all laptops and portable devices as well as ensuring they can be physically secured when appropriate.
An Alzheimer's society spokesperson said: "Unfortunately the laptops were stolen as they were waiting to be encrypted. However, before the incidents, the Society had already begun rolling out an information governance programme. All senior managers have now been trained on data managing and this is due to be offered to all staff in the coming months."
As of April 2010 those who repeatedly breach an undertaking can be subject to fines of up to half a million pounds.
