by service provider Turning Point has found evidence that integrating health and social care is highly cost effective. The report 'Benefits Realisation: Assessing the evidence for the cost benefit and cost effectiveness of integrated health and social care' is the first systematic review of evidence from the UK and abroad.
It found that potentially early intervention services could save the NHS up to £2.65 for every £1 spent.
This backs up findings by the government for its Partnerships for Older People Projects that showed care spending on service users fell by £2,166 per person per year after using preventive services, while users reported better outcomes.
For every £1 spent on Popp services, £1.20 was saved in spending on emergency hospital beds. The scheme, funded from 2006-8, supported 470 projects in 29 areas and benefited more than 250,000 people.
Turning Point's report also highlighted that the evidence for case management is positive particularly in reducing hospital admissions and delaying residential care placements among older people and people with long term conditions.
It also found a strong business case for integrated health and social care teams serving local neighbourhoods and supporting people with complex needs.
