Family courts-information pilot

Judy-Cooper-yellow.jpgFamily courts are beginning to open up to the public and the media after repeated criticism they are not transparent enough.

A pilot involving family courts in Leeds and Cardiff will see, for the first time, the online publication of some judgements in family cases including care proceedings and contact and residence cases.

It's part of a drive to help the public and media find out how family courts work and how decisions are reached. The judgements will be anonymous to protect the identities of the families involved and the families themselves will get a copy of the judgement. The justice department is also considering retaining copies of judgements for children involved to read when they are older.
