Council leader admits staff harmed children in their care

WelshFlag.jpgThe leader of troubled Pembrokeshire council has admitted that a small number of his staff 'harmed children in their care', according to local reports.

John Davies' admission follows a report earlier this month by schools inspectorate Estyn and the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales which uncovered a "shocking failure" to manage child abuse allegations in Pembrokeshire's schools. Children's commissioner for Wales Keith Towler is said to have described the report as "deeply disturbing".

The report has also provoked a row - according to the Local Government Chronicle - between two Labour ministers and Davies - also leader of the Welsh Local Government Association - after he accused them of a politically-motivated attack on independently-controlled councils.

Hello again! It's been a busy day in Manchester at the ADCS annual conference. One of the big announcements made was from children and families minister Sarah Teather, who announced the launch of a consultation into legislation that will strengthen the role of the Children's Commissioner. The consultation is based on recommendations made by John Dunford in December 2010, which said the role should be combined with that of the Children's Rights Director, among other things.

Teather said the UK needed to improve the lives of its children, taking on a stronger commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Ten teens from Liverpool's children in care council are 'taking over' the local authority for the day, sharing their views with managers about what they think does and does not work within their service provision.

Businesses in West Berkshire, meanwhile, are letting young people shadow employees at the Newbury Weekly News, Thames Valley Police and Sovereign Housing.

In Exeter, six year 10 pupils are joining eight young people already working for the county on the young apprentice scheme to experience a day in the life of a county council employee.
