Green Man ponders Burma

The biggest ethical dilemma we are looking at this week may be the situation in Burma and what we can do about it.

We see what's happening and most of us wonder 'what can I do to help?' I flounder for an answer and find myself coming to the sad conclusion that there's very little that I can do directly.

I don't like that feeling of being unable to influence something, not being able to make things better.

We are social beings and ­function best in groups or as part of a community. Of course there are a few solitary ­individuals but most of us want friends, family, and a sense of belonging and we actively seek the company of others who share our values.

Over the weekend I worked at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) in Preston, as 'Professor Fiddlesticks' at an event put on for new students, or 'freshers'.

Some of you will have noticed that is 'Organic Fortnight', a time when producers and retailers celebrate and promote products grown without artificial fertilisers and pesticides... and hopefully persuade even more of us to choose to buy organic.

I may have an unusual lifestyle trying to be ultra-green and low carbon, but I do enjoy many of the norms of modern life. Specifically, I do watch quite a bit of television, for entertainment, education, information, relaxation. So I'd like to comment on 3 items I've seen recently or am watching currently.
