Much as though the so-called 'mile high club' might be attractive to some people, joining it does involve getting on an aeroplane, which some of us do not want to do.... So I have joined the No Miles High Club, a pioneering initiative to reward people for not flying.

In December I invited everybody who'd been involved in helping to set up York Credit Union to come for a drink to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first public meeting in 1997. Not many people turned up, but it was a good evening and I was pleased to meet one of the original volunteers, John Hume, a local businessman and philanthropist. Over several drinks we had a jovial conversation... and he proudly told me about his daughter's latest screenwriting success.
I have set myself a New Year's Resolution, and as with many of us who do this, it is focussed on improving something or achieving something in our personal lives. I was pleased therefore to read about Lauren Revans' resolution in this blog to be greener in the office. I always write my blog entry on a sheet or two of paper which is printed with something else on one side only, before typing it into my laptop. I have also chosen not to have a printer, which reduces the piles of paper I am responsible for. I wish Lauren well with her aims.

Well, 2007 turned out to be an interesting year for me, as the world really seemed to be catching up with what I've been going on about for 20 or more years. This was reflected in my getting this blog and column... even social workers are being urged to 'go green' now!
