Psychotherapy, drugs and the Daily Mail

While psychotherapy may not help all depressed people, the loss of psychiatrists practicing psychotherapy means the loss of basic common sense in psychiatry about depression.
This is a quote from a good piece in the Huffington Post by clinical psychologist Bruce E Levine about the recent finding that there has been a major shift among US psychiatrists from psychotherapy to drugs. Unsurprisingly, the major reason for the shift is money, says Levine.
The Mail has done its latest story on the link between drug use and mental health problems. There's undoubtedly an association between the two, but is it just me or is the mail only interested in mental health when there's a drug connection?

And does exercise help in tackling depression or not? After lots of research suggesting it does, there's a piece in the New York Times saying there is not a causal link. But the article concludes that exercise may still be beneficial for treating anxiety and depression. Now I'm just confused.

Non-Londoners look away now please - I am going to talk about something which you will have very little interest in. Liberal Conspiracy has been suggesting we should have a new newspaper for London. I absolutely agree - the Standard is right wing and owned by the Mail, and the two freebies are owned by Murdoch and the Standard - so we're not exactly getting balanced media coverage in the capital. Unfortunately wanting something won't make it happen. I can't see much chance of a new paper being launched in London given that papers are generally in decline.

Hey Simeon, just saw your comment on my blog. You can feel free to post whatever kind of links you want on your site! I'll have to start reading it :) Thanks for the interest!

Still Dreaming

I'd love to see a Guardian London or something like they propose. I'm not sure they'd be a massive market for it. The newspaper market in London is quite heavy (literally - when you see the rubbish generated) at the moment. It would be nice to dream though..
