December 2008 Archives

Hello one and all

I've been a bit intermittent recently and this is my last post of the year but I'll be back all guns blazing next year.

Here's a nice little piece about how to stop being an "over-thinker" which is full of useful tips.
I've been looking at some of the other mental health bloggers out there and spotted a few points of interest.

Furious Seasons has responded to an article in Nature suggesting that brain enhancing drugs should be freely available to people who want to improve their concentration or exam results.
I know I haven't posted for ages but I seem to have become distracted by Christmas - going out, drinking etc.

But I have managed to pull myself out of my overindulgence fuelled torpor to put together this brief post. Here goes...

Don't ever say that Mad World isn't a thoroughly multimedia experience. Please don't say that...even though it would probably be true.

Anyway, here is a podcast about mental health recovery, which is an important and oft-neglected topic. It's from Australia and looks at the idea of recovery from a service user perspective:

personal improvement was not always the result of medical intervention: support and social connectedness was seen as most important, as well as medication, spirituality and in some cases, cigarettes.

Well, I now have a new design for my blog - what do you think of it? I like it - particularly all the dots.

On to business though. Much has been made over the years of Bhutan's policy of promoting Gross National Happiness over Gross Domestic Product - but what is the reality of the policy and how applicable is it elsewhere?

There's a piece today in the International Herald Tribune on brain rhythms, with a New York scientist claiming:

"abnormal brain rhythms help account for a variety of serious disorders, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, tinnitus and depression"

Here's an interesting piece of research which finds that mindfulness based cognitive therapy is as effective as anti-depressants.
