by Keith SellickThe North/South divide has raised its head again - this time in relation to children's happiness and well-being. Countering the stereotypes, the research from Ofsted and the Department of Children Schools and Families finds young people in some of the most deprived areas of the North are happier and more emotionally secure than those in the south.
The research into children's well-being in England's councils also
finds that children and young people in inner London are the least
likely to drink or use drugs, and rich boroughs such as Richmond on
Thames are places of youthful ennui. Many media stereotypes are undermined by this study.
The idea of rural idylls was also shattered with Scilly Isles, Suffolk and West Sussex coming in the bottom fifth of councils (although East Sussex was in the top fifth of places), and plenty of southern counties coming in the bottom 40 per cent.
Even the county of my birth and childhood, Somerset, came out poorly.
Oh well, time for a gratuitous play of the West Country's finest Wurzels to cheer everyone up
