Blue Monday Baloney?

It's Blue Monday today, Monday 19th January - the most depressing day of the year. At least, it is if you believe psychologist Cliff Arnall's unconvincing equation - which we first mentioned in Mad World a couple of weeks ago.

The Mental Health Foundation has latched on to the idea and is running a campaign encouraging the British public to overcome the winter blues to raise people's spirits and some vital funds for the charity.

Personally, I think the equation is hogwash. Still, it's always worth considering our own and others' wellbeing when the weather's so gloomy.

Blue Monday was devised using the following mathematical equation:

[W + (D-d)] x TQ
      M x Na

The model uses six identifiable factors: weather (W), debt (d), time since Christmas (T), time since failing our new year's resolutions (Q), low motivational levels (M) and the feeling of a need to take action (Na).
