September 2009 Archives

I've been getting more into cycling recently - but fortunately I've never pushed it as far as this man.
I am always more than eager to bring you tales of social work portrayed on the silver screen. I like to think these Hollywood stories add a sprinkling of glamour to my otherwise rather humdrum postings.
I'm not sure what I think about the whole Gordon Brown - Andrew Marr pill question debate. You can check out the video below, in which Marr asks Brown whether he uses pills to help him "get through".
Family court body Cafcass has announced job cuts as it looks to balance its budgets following a surge of cases in the wake of Baby Peter.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Cafcass has now been compared to weak beer by social work blogger Wall.
This is the sage advice proffered in the Wall Street Journal, based on some new research. And it seems particularly relevant to those who work in social care, who often work long hours.
Anti-stigma campaign Shift has produced a range of video featuring people with mental health problems talking about their experiences and particularly how other people react to them.
Check out this excerpt from a really interesting-looking UK comic book about schizophrenia.
When I discovered that relationship advice website TheCoupleConnection.net had produced a guide to having better arguments, I was quite excited.
There's an entertaining post over on Mental Nurse about how you can tell the importance of particular staff types in a mental health ward.
More tales of the dangers facing social workers in the North Wales Daily Post.
If so, you'll be interested to read a piece in the New York Times about his Red Book.
The Progress website reports on rumours that Gordon Brown is taking antidepressants and associated claims that this would somehow undermine his leadership.
Ok, serious story first - HSJ reports that PCTs need to improve their performance on providing mental health care for young people with learning difficulties.
There's an interesting debate going on at the LabourList blog about Martin Narey's comments on adoption.
You wait twenty years for a social work recruitment campaign, then two come along at once.
You can't possibly feature any more Help Give Them A Voice videos on this blog can you, someone is possibly asking.
There's an interesting opinion piece on Spiked by Ken McLaughlin in which he argues that the new Give Them A Voice social work recruitment campaign and the government's attempts to portray social work in a more positive light "betrays a disdainful assumption that it is the general public who are the problem" and it is simply their attitudes which must be changed.
I've been taking more than a passing interest in the emerging field of mindfulness and mental health here on Mad World, so I'm pleased to see that there is mindfulness conference taking place in London in November.
Just got back from a week off and what better way to mark my return than another video from the government's Help Give Them A Voice social work recruitment campaign.
