New Nice depression guidelines: counselling no longer first chioce

New NICE guidelines on the treatment of depression in the UK appear to have downgraded the use of counselling as a response, in favour of other treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy.
I'd be interested to hear what people think of this or any other thoughts you might have about the new guidance. (Beware it's over 500 pages!)

Isn't CBT a form of (goal-focused) counselling?

Yes, you're right - counselling is a bit of a catch-all term. I imagine what they are referring to is non goal-focused types of therapy

Shame that only CBT is recommended. This is not what one could call "patient choice".
