Most people with learning with learning disabilities should not have children, says columnist

Thought I would draw your attention to an interesting column in The Times, in which Minette Marrin argues that many people with learning disabilities should not have children, due to cost reasons and the implications for the children.
Here is the paragraph that most caught my eye:

A senior social work manager boasted to me once that his proudest professional achievement... was to facilitate the marriage of two people with LDs... who then had two babies. When I asked what support they received, he said they needed 24-hour care, which involved three full-time trained workers on eight-hour shifts, with agency workers on top if anyone was sick. I hesitate even to try to put a cost on this... Yet in the same organisation other people with LDs were having their modest care packages cut
I'd be interested in people's thoughts...

A thoughtful article written by someone with a bit of insight into learning disability. I dont agree with her conclusion but nevertheless it was an interesting read. Spawned some good comments too.

I agree - I think it was a good read and made me think
