Campaigner and founder of the national Star Wards mental health project, Marion Janner, has been awardedan OBE for services to mental healthcare in the New Year Honours List.
Grim story from the US about a social worker killed in row over whose turn it was on one of those gym cross training machines. 
Charity Barnardo's is involved in organising an alternative to the Queen's Speech on Christmas Day. At ten past 3, it will broadcast, on MySpace, The Teens' Speech, which aims to capture what a range of teenagers think about Britain today and in the future.
There's a story in the Telegraph about research which found an association between cultural activity and happiness. 
The US film Precious, featuring Mariah Carey as a social worker, has been shortlisted for two Golden Globe awards, in the best drama and best actress categories.
Interesting report in the LA Times about research which appeared to find that an intensive six-month training programme for children with poor reading skills was accompanied by changes in the brain.
Many mental health patients have raised concerns about the continuing use of mixed sex wards in psychiatric units.
