The US film Precious, featuring Mariah Carey as a social worker, has been shortlisted for two Golden Globe awards, in the best drama and best actress categories.
Community Care readers were invited to an advance screening a couple of weeks ago and one of the social workers who went along, Penny Dalrymple, was pretty impressed with the film.
Community Care's own Ruth Smith was less impressed, however, saying she did not believe the film portrayed social workers very positively.
It's certainly fair to say that Carey had to seriously "de-glamorise" to play the social worker, who appeared rather ineffectual. The actress playing a teacher who is central to the film, however, was both inspirational and glamorous. Different rules apply when it comes to the media portrayal of different professions it seems!
Anyway, you'll get the chance to make up your own mind, when the film releases in the UK in the new year.
