Avatar update: why we long for fictional worlds

avatar.jpgI posted last week about young people who were feeling depressed with the real world after seeing the science fiction film Avatar.

The story seemed an interesting reflection of our times but I couldn't offer much analysis beyond that.

Luckily someone else has...
Writing for Psychology Today anthropologist Peter Stromberg suggests the ability to immerse oneself in imaginary worlds is pretty common and develops in early childhood as part of play.

I guess it's part of the important human trait of imagining what it's like to be in someone else's shoes.
