Social workers pessimistic about 2010

We run a regular poll on the Community Care homepage, asking readers about their opinion on various topical social care issues. Our most recent poll asked readers if they felt more optimistic about social care now than at the start of 2009 and the results are striking.
Just over 80% of respondents did not feel more optimistic now than at the start of 2009. The reasons are probably quite straightforward: the massive public sector cuts expected in the wake of the recession and the uncertainty that comes with a general election and possible change of government.

On a more positive note we should learn early this year how the government intends to react to the Social Work Taskforce report, with the changes hopefully improving the viability of the social work role, even though some fear cash constraints will undermine lofty ambitions.

Meanwhile, check out Fighting Monsters' preview of the year ahead and a more personal account from Social Worker-to-be.
