There is a programme at 9pm on BBC2 tonight, called Why did you kill my dad, by a documentary maker whose father was killed by a man with long-term mental health problems.
The blurb for the programme says:

This highly personal film documents Julian's journey to find out what happened to his father and his attempt to uncover the true scale and cost of killings by the mentally ill in Britain today. By talking to other similarly affected families, Julian puts a human face to the statistics and reveals serious problems and repeated failures at the heart of Britain's mental health system.

There's a good piece about it over on Fighting Monsters.
