The government has pledged £48m to help transform frontline social work in the UK - see the story in Community Care for more details.
Obviously this is a big deal for social work, being the culmination of the process that started with the Baby P case in 2008.

There are also to be new vacancy and turnover indicators for social services, which has to be a good thing.

It appears at the moment that the £48m is not all new money, with the extra money to tackle IT problems and clear the Cafcass backlog apparently announced previously. We have a team of busy bees working on this so more details and analysis to come on Community Care throughout the day
