Do social workers need iPads?

ipad-flickr.jpgThey may well be very nicely designed but I'm usually rather sceptical about people saying they "need" the latest shiny consumer gadget, such as the iPad.

However, in an article in Bizgene, a social worker says it has really helped with her work. Best get down to the office of whoever buys your computer equipment and tell them you need one right away.

as the social worker in question I'm happy to discuss this with anybody interested :)

Great - I'd be interested to find out more!

I'm not familiar with iPad, but my previous employer used to provide us with tablet PCs; The ones that resemble a small laptop with the ability to rotate the screen and fold it flat against the keyboard. By using a special pen, it was possible to write on Word documents and forms and have this transformed to type. With a little skill, one coud come up with an acceptable typed document which could, as you say, be signed "on site". The PC would then be placed in a docking station back at the office, and thus you could have a proper keyboard, mouse and second monitor (have you discovered using a PC with extended desktop)?
With a paperless filing system, you could then upload the document without printing it.
Disadvantages? Tablet PCs are a bit heavier than iPads and not so much fun. Also, it meant being out and about with confidential reports on your C drive, which is dodgy from a security point of view (though less so than with a paper document)! With some secure wireless connectivity, it would be possible to upload the form from within the client's home, getting round the problem.
But yes; improved productivity and less to lug about.
