Extraordinary Channel 4 drama-documentary last night – The Doctor Who Hears Voices – about a doctor diagnosed with schizophrenia who wants to continue practising despite voices in her head telling her to kill herself.

Ruth’s employer does not realise the extent of her condition, as she had told them only that she was depressed.
Ruth enlists the help of Dr Rufus May, a psychiatrist who doesn’t recognise schizophrenia as a medical condition to be treated with drugs.
Instead, in dramatic fashion, he engages the voices Ruth hears and tries to tackle her problems through dialogue.
Very powerful stuff and thought-provoking about our views of mental health, safety and illness.
