For those interested in the participation of children in the family court, the Family Justice Council has published a podcast about a recent debate it held on the issue.

Stick to reading the news, Sir Trevor

Comedy has been in the headlines this week rather a lot, what with the furore around the prank phone calls made by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand to actor Andrew Sachs. But I was expecting less controversial humour when I sat down to watch Sir Trevor McDonald host the National Television Awards on ITV last night.

There's been a plethora of 'on the road in the US of A' programmes hitting our screens recently obviously timed to coincide with next week's presidential elections.

Dust down your sociology textbooks and try to remember what Stan Cohen said in "Folk Devils and Moral Panics", because we are in the midst of one.

Sir Michael Parkinson kicked off the "Making Dignity a Reality" session at the national children and adult services conference. Sadly, the Department of Health's dignity ambassador didn't actually dignify us with his presence. Instead, we were treated to a pre-recorded video message.

For one person it can mean getting out for more fresh air, for another a choice over when to eat their evening meal - personalisation is different for each service user.

The government has already made clear that the move to more personalised adult social services will be a performance indicator for councils in England over the next three years.

Community Care staff will be at the National Children and Adult Services Conference this week in Liverpool.

A few months ago I blogged about how the Fabian Society's suggestion that the word 'chav' was being used to fuel "middle-class hatred of the white working class" was an out-of-date view.

There was a very entertaining article in the Guardian's G2 section last Thursday (9th October) on US reality TV judge Judy Sheindlin.

Today is Blog Action Day, a day when thousands of bloggers across the world will unite to discuss a single issue - poverty. The aim is to "raise awareness, initiate action and shake the web."

Why is it that reported offences of hate crime towards disabled people are seldom investigated or prosecuted?

The latest "social workers are stealing our kids" story appeared in the Mail on Sunday over the weekend.

Phew, that was close wasn't it? For a minute there it looked as if global capitalism was going to get its comeuppance. But, luckily, the good ol' taxpayer came to the rescue. Despite my misgivings about the government (and those of about half a dozen other countries) bailing out the multi millionaires that run the banks I suppose it had little choice but to do its White Knight impression.

I return to a story I first noticed a few weeks back. Edinburgh social services was described then as "broken" and now the social worker are apparently in revolt.

What is social work like in the US? Is it different to here in the UK? Surely many of the issues must be the same, even if some of the systems and structures are different. One good way to find out is to have a look at some of the US social work bloggers, and that's exactly what I'm going to do now. I think it's really valuable to read the personal accounts of people who are prepared to write anonymously and honestly about the day to day experience of their job and its impact on their lives.

Want to see a rather clear illustration of changing times in social care? Then take a spin on Google 2001, which allows you to search using the site's oldest index, from seven years ago.

Healthy incentives for the disadvantaged?

What incentive do you need to take your health seriously? With the constant barrage of media coverage over what constitutes a healthy - or in most cases unhealthy - lifestyle it is hard to imagine that there are people out there who still live in blissful ignorance.

Jamie Oliver took to the streets of Rotherham to try to teach people how to cook on Channel Four last night. Whether you think the man is patronising incarnate or the vitamin messiah, there's little doubt that he's a charismatic man who inspires others to get difficult things done.

Given it's national older people's day, this post has an elderly feel to it. It's not good news from the States (is it ever?) where 94% of nursing homes have breached health and safety standards, the New York Times reports.

This year's Older People's Day feels more relevant than ever.

The last 12 months have seen a shift in attitudes towards our senior citizens. The news that pensioners outnumber children for the first time in British history has not gone unnoticed in Whitehall, with the government finally beginning to face up to the challenges of an ageing population.

This is illustrated by a clutch of major policies due to be announced in the next few months: the national dementia strategy and the green paper on care and support, to name but two.
