Older people's day, nursing homes and pets

Given it's national older people's day, this post has an elderly feel to it. It's not good news from the States (is it ever?) where 94% of nursing homes have breached health and safety standards, the New York Times reports.
About 17 percent of nursing homes had deficiencies that caused "actual harm or immediate jeopardy" to patients, said the report

That's scary. I had a relative who used to warn me "never get old, son". It's a sad state of affairs.

Dom Care Dragon has written about the difficulties of caring for an older person where there is a pet involved.

And Fighting Monsters considers the issues around dementia and euthanasia.

On a completely unrelated note, apparently the credit crunch is making us do strange things...
