A report published last month by the Care Leavers' Association highlighted how hundreds of children being looked after by local authorities go missing each year, and the increased dangers this poses for this vulnerable group.

This issue was tragically brought into focus over the weekend when it emerged that the first young person to be stabbed to death in London in 2009 had run away from his out of authority foster home earlier that day.

Charges have been made in the case so we have to be careful what we say about the circumstances of it, but what this emphasises beyond doubt is how important it is for agencies to keep as close tabs as possible on the whereabouts of looked after children.

Read Community Care's feature on children in care going missing or see page 18 of 29th January issue of the magazine.
