Yesterday there were qualms over the future of key children's social work reforms due to the resignation of children's minister Beverley Hughes. Today, similar qualms could be felt in the adult's sector - with the move of health secretary Alan Johnson to the post of home secretary.
Johnson's successor must ensure the momentum is not lost on the forthcoming reforms to adult social care. Hopes for the green paper, expected next month, have already been damaged by the economic crisis, as blogger Mithran Samuel has recently pointed out. They must not be scuppered further by the reshuffle.
We can only wait to see if the new health secretary will be able to stick to Johnson's pledge last September to put a "radically revised system" of adult social care at the top of the department of health's goals for the next decade. The big if now is whether Labour will be there to see it through.
