High social worker sickness rates reported in Liverpool

Kirsty-McGregor-v2.jpgLiverpool social workers took 28,727 days - equivalent to 78 years - of sick leave in the first nine months of 2009, the Liverpool Echo reported today. This works out at an average of 12.7 days off per staff member between January and September.

However, when you compare this to the national average of 11.8 days of sick leave taken by social workers in 2008, it doesn't seem so shocking.

Especially after a report into Birmingham Council's children's services, published last month, found one in five full-time members of staff were off sick at any one time.

This does not excuse or explain high sickness rates in Liverpool, but it's important to put this kind of news in context.

30 new social work posts

Liverpool Council has launched drop-in clinics where employees can get advice and support if they are feeling stressed or worried. It has also created 30 additional children's social worker posts to spread the workload.
