Adult social care providers in England can apply for a share of £12m to improve their IT facilities and internet access for the benefit of staff and service users.
The Social Care Institute for Excellence will distribute the Department of Health's Get Connected grant over the next two years to enable providers to access information and communication more effectively.
There are around 22,000 independent sector registered social care services for adults in England. The grant is aimed at smaller organisations in the private or voluntary sector who do not have access to high-quality internet or digital technology.
Internet access to providers can support the professional development of staff by providing access to online training resources, such as Social Care Online, Scie's free database of social care information.
It will also benefit service users, who can gain access to online support networks and keep in touch with communities.
In addition, the Care Quality Commission will require adult care providers in England to register online from April 2010. Without good access to the internet, this may be challenging for some organisations.
