The ongoing mystery of the roles and tasks of adult social workers

Kirsty-McGregor-v2.jpgCare minister Phil Hope launched the long-awaited joint statement on the future roles and tasks of adult social workers at Skills for Care's annual conference last Thursday.

But, try as we might, Community Care has not been able to get a copy from the Department of Health.

Last night, at the launch of the General Social Care Council's annual education report, Hope once again referred to the statement, which he said was published last week.

The DH's response today? "We'll get back to you."

The article on roles and tasks highlights where a College of Social Work across the UK would help share different ways we approach what may seem to be the same issues. What at first might seem a simple issue affecting all social workers wherever they practice in the world, with whichever group of people, is in fact much more complex. We practice in 4 different legal & political jurisdictions in the UK, each with their own different complexion of political leadership. What works in one country may not work in another - but we do not always have to reinvent the wheel - so whilst I suggested that it is helpful for the practitioner and the manager to have a clear practice governance framework of professional and managerial accountability I would pull back from suggesting that other countries should 'copy' what we do in Scotland - but we can each share our positive devlopments in policy and practice with each other.
