A social worker who lied about her historic criminal convictions when applying to become a foster carer has been admonished for four years by the General Social Care Council.
Janet Thomas-Dill omitted her middle name when undergoing her first Criminal Records Bureau check in September 2004. This led to her receiving a clear result with no previous convictions recorded.
For the next four years, she submitted CRB applications omitting her middle name and received clear results, a conduct committee found.
The truth was only revealed when she included her middle name on a CRB check for her application to become a foster carer through Ethelbert Fostering Service, based in Kent, in 2007.
Thomas-Dill attended the GSCC hearing and indicated that she was glad the issue was now out in the open.
The committee concluded the risk of recurrence was low and that there had been no complaints about her general conduct as a social worker. It also took into account the fact she had apologised.
It also said it was "ironic" as, had Thomas-Dill been open and honest about her previous convictions from the outset, it was "unlikely" she would have been prevented from pursuing a career in social work or as a foster carer.
