The development group for the National College of Social Work moved closer to appointing an interim chair after the deadline for applications closed this week.

Although details of the recruitment process remain a closely guarded secret, Community Care can reveal the following:

  • There has been "significant interest" in the post, according to the Social Care Institute for Excellence, which is facilitating the group (but they won't say how many applications have been received)
  • Only applicants with "substantial experience" in social work as a practitioner, leader or academic have been considered
  • Social workers will be among the interviewing panel
  • The salary for the interim chair will be £35,000 for 2-3 days per week

The interim chair will be announced next month. He or she will face the small task of raising the profile of the profession in the face of a hostile media and lobbying for greater funding from government during Britain's worst budget deficit since the Second World War.
