How much do i love working in Early Intervention in Psychosis? - as my son used to say as i love you as big as the sky, which does not really make sense but you get the gist that i absolutely love it.

i love the fact our assessment process can take up to three months if needed which means we can do a thourough assessment, and /' or  we can put someone on watching brief  - this is for people we are not sure about or people  who we think could be developing a psychotic illness, therefore hopefully we dont miss things and in that time frame we have space to do some sort of good work with people

i love  that we dont tell people that we cannot help them until they have stopped misusing whatever substance they are using to self medicate, you see i work part time in a CMHT also and the culture there is if you dont sort out your substance misuse first you cannot have a service, which to me makes little sense because if someone is using substances because their emotions and feelings are too painful to then ask them to stop using and then we can 'help' is nonsense because we are basically asking them to take away their coping mechanism without any support so they can access our service, i work in rural ruralshire and i think some colleagues think we don't have issues with dual diagnosis (but that's for the next post!)

i love that we try and work with the whole family when the young person wants us to and if they dont give us permission to share info we make them aware that their parent/partner /supporter are able to access a carers support service in their own right, and we actively do this we dont wait until the parent/ partner/supporter asks.

i love that we try and keep the young person socially included in their communities and work with their education provider or employer to enable them to keep their life as normal as possible.

i  love that we don't buy into the illness model of psychosis and pathologies peoples experiences  and that the social model drives what we  do

this week i love my job

happy valentines day

p.s dear dave (cameron)  these cuts to youth service, libraries, social care etc are going to damage the good outcomes we have for  our young people at  the moment let alone the rest of society

Its not all bad i work for a CIT psychosis team which replaced the CMHT along with a Affective Disorder CIT we are given 12 weeks to formulate a care plan and after a struggle i admit, now work well with dual diagnosis service users. Each team throughout the trust having a dual diagnosis lead. Still a lack of effective joint working with substance misuse team but we are making progress. A lot more effort been put into psychosocial interventions even if health like to claim it as their idea rather than admiting it's social work. Even had the chairman of the trust telling us last week that it was ok to keep people on for social needs. Just concerned about how it will be affected by cuts, payment by results and Gp Commisioning

Great to read about a positive week in social work! Sounds like a real winner of a job you've got their. Hope it keeps up (and that there are some services left in a year for the young people you work with).
