It is unthinkable that student teachers could work hard for their qualification without experiencing time in a school, supervised by a teacher. But a newly qualified social worker can begin work in child protection with a full caseload, without any experience at all of working in a busy local authority children's department. The rules allow it. A Community Care investigation shows that more than 100 of the most recent social work graduates had never worked at a council, or other statutory setting.
