I've been doing this now since February 2008--almost a year. Hard to believe. And in the spirit of reflecting upon a new year before us and an old one behind us, I'm going to do a bit of a round up and hit upon some favorite links, posts, sites, and numbers.
Sites:
One of the best sites I found this year was The Concentration of Wealth Gallery. Anytime I want to feel righteous indignation about the Haves and Have Nots, or need fuel for my rants, I go there. Great site.
I love The Homeless Guy. Dude in Tennessee who writes about his experiences of life throught the lens of being homeless. I was telling someone about this site and his response was: "Well, is he really homeless? How can update his blog so much if he's on the streets?" I'm going to trust that he is homeless and either a) makes very good use of his public library or b) somehome managed to obtain a laptop and makes very good use of public wifi.
I just gave this blog a nod the other day, but Planet Money is great.
And for something completely different: The Carrot Revolution. A site about art and art education. Continuing on that theme, the best American photo blog this year: Mute. The Snowsuit Effort was a fabulous photo blog I encountered last year. He chronicled homeless men in Detroit. But he obviously closed up shop, because he hasn't updated in almost two years. Shame, really, as he was starting to get some recognition. Still, the site remains and it's great to go back and browse. NY Nitty Gritty offers a daily photo from......Duluth, Minnesota! No, it doesn't. But I would love it all the more if it did. Still, a daily pic from New York City isn't a bad thing.
In addition to all the social work blogs listed on my sidebar, there's a great UK social work blog: CareSpace.
Rants and the like:
What Powderfinger Said is always a place to go for a good rant. His January 1 entry gives you a taste--it's on income disparity in US, complete with all kinds of links. In the same vein, Prin had this post on New Year's Eve.
CB at Fighting Monsters, a fellow social worker from the other side of the pond, had a great post with all kinds of links to our election. I sent you there once. I'll do it again now.
Personal Blog numbers:
1 blog
13 public followers*
23 Quotes from the Field
26 average visitors a day who stay for an average of one minute and three seconds. I'm BIG TIME--I broke the minute barrier!
53 average subscribers
236 posts in 2008
9657 individual hits as of today
For the record:
You social work bloggers--and others--of whom I'm aware know I keep up with you. I'm going to start keeping track of the entries that really strike a nerve with me for future reference. The ones up there I mentioned were strictly from memory. And you know that's not exactly a reliable source, even on my most lucid days.
Have a great weekend! ->
*And I thank you. I'm not sure I would admit to following along...
