The Diva and I had the house to ourselves on Saturday afternoon, so on I whim I took her on a road trip to see our state capitol building. It's closed on Saturdays, but the weather was nice and she had a dandy time running around the courtyard, running up and down the stairs, playing hide-n-seek and in general being six.
There was a lone tent in front of the building. I noticed it immediately. I thought it a bit odd, but since no one was around didn't give the matter much more attention. It took me a while to register there was an actual person in there.
Come to find out a young lady was "camping out".
I asked her what she was doing and she shared this: she was protesting. She said she didn't like the fact that women don't earn as much as men, even in the year 2009. Additionally, she's a bit put out with corporate welfare. Who's sticking up for the middle class? She said she wanted to publicly protest these issues.
Nice!
I asked her name. She wouldn't give it to me.
I asked if I could take a picture of her to post on my blog. She wouldn't allow it. (I guess my tens of readers made her skittish.)
I asked if I could take a picture of her tent. No go.
So, just to reiterate: She was publicly protesting (her words, not mine) income disparity on a macro scale: men vs. women and corporations vs. the middle class. She was camped out in front of the state capitol. And yet she wouldn't give me her name or let me take her picture, let alone a picture of her tent. Come to think of it, her big protest came on a weekend day during a major holiday break. I could park right out front, meaning maybe twenty people would encounter her all day. No signs, either.
On the other hand, in her mind she was taking ACTION. She camped out (until 5:00 pm) in front of a public building (hidden from view in her tent). She talked to me (very much not a legislator) and told me her concerns (only after I approached her first).
Ah, the supreme logic that comes with being 23. ->
