With less than 36 hours left of The Pretender, America is swooning over our President Elect. Festivities have been going on since Saturday morning, when Obama left a train station in Philadelphia en route to DC, mirroring the final section of the trip Abraham Lincoln made close to 150 years ago.
Yesterday there was a free concert at the Lincoln Memorial with an estimated 400,000 in attendance. Music greats like Stevie Wonder, U2, James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen performed. I heard part of it on the radio, lamently tuning in when Garth Brooks was on stage (although, really, he wasn't that bad). My Mother The Tour Guide was there...I texted her during the performance.
Today there are dinners galore, another concert and service activities to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Magic happens tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. Eastern Standard time, beginning with Joe Biden. Obama will be the first president to take the oath on the same bible that Lincoln used. Estimates are that two million people will be on hand at the mall to witness the event. I think the schools in our area are planning on low attendance rates tomorrow so kids can stay home and watch.
And being America, there's merchandise galore. If you can think of it, there is something out there bearing Obama's image. And, without changing the rating of my blog, I do mean IF YOU CAN THINK OF IT, it's out there. Really. Salon has an article about the merchandising complete with those all important links.
