Driving to the hospital tonight I saw something that looked a bit unusual in the road. As I got closer, I realized it was some kind of animal. A pup of the canine variety--perhaps a coyote.
The poor thing was flailing around, undoubtedly rendered helpless by a car only moments before, it's little legs waving desperately in the air like a doomed kite caught in an unforgiving crosswind.
By the time I got in the other lane and was up close enough to get a good look, he was surrounded by other little pups. Three of them there in the road, apparently wanting to help. Or at least not abandon one of their own. One of the them looked into my headlights directly. He seemed torn: should I stay or should I get out of the way of the one ton box of metal?
I didn't know quite what to do. On the one hand the poor thing was obviously hurt and in need of some kind of assistance. On the other, I was running late, driving on a busy four-lane road, one frequented by The Law, and considering the fate of what was ultimately a wild animal. I slowed down and kept watch in my rear view mirror, frozen with indecision. In the interim, momma canine sped across the road, grabbed the pup in her mouth, and brought it into the woods so fast that if I had blinked, I would have probably missed it.
I'm quite sure the animal was a goner. It made me sad. ->
