I've told you about back-up on call. The person who is second in line to receive a phone call if the first person gets hammered.

For instance:

I got called to go out a couple of weeks ago and quite literally one minute later the phone rang again. The second call was from a different hospital.
Me, to the answering service: Let me guess, since I just got called to go to St. Nowhere, this is a call is from Anytown Memorial, right?

Answering Service: Of course.

Me: Well obviously, we need to call back up for the second call. Who's on?

Answering Service: Nathan.
OK, a bit of back story before I go on. Nathan is classic middle management. He's not my boss, he's my boss's boss. He's a nice man, really, but he absolutely, 100% HATES doing assessments. Hates them. The reason the back-up on call person exists is because of Nathan. When the program was brand new and there weren't a lot of clinicians to go around, he volunteered to help out should the person on call get slammed.

He had to go out every weekend for a month.

Not only that, but he's the one who is so insistent that we arrive at the hospital within 90 minutes of the original call. This deadline is more of a guidline at night and overnights, but in the early evening? No way. There's too much of a chance that administrators are still wandering the halls. We don't want to look bad.

So here we were, two years later. I didn't even know that Nathan still took shifts, but obviously he did this particular day because no one else was available. That was the only explanation.

Back to the conversation:
Me: Nathan's on? He's going to LOVE hearing from me.

Answering service: Ooo! Can I call him? ->
