Hi All,

I need some advice, after graduating two years ago with a History degree I have decided that Social work is something that I really would like to pursue.  The poproblem being that all Social work Masters require at least 6 months experience.  I worked at a summer camp for two months and had some work experience shadowing a social worker, although this was when I was at school.  I am currently about to embark on some voluntry work for a youth group as well as for Childline but I am worried that this is not enough to be able to apply for September 2009.  I am considering applying for teaching assistant jobs in the hope that this will also be seen as experience but I am unsure.

Does anyone have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think a TA job would be seen as the experience they are looking for. But my advice would be to apply for the course and see what happens, how you present yourself and your life experience (as in personal life experiences) as much as work counts hugely.

I worked voluntarily as firstly a home visiting volunteer and then the chair of a home start vol agency with the aim of providing experience for uni. It is my belief that it is important to gain a refernce which proves accountability, I feel that if you feel that being a teaching assistant is something you want to do do it. We are all one organisation there is no education/social services anymore. I personally have found a relief residential care worker job invaluable for my personal experience and development. I took up this post after qualifying but think it would be a great starting point for anyone wishing to be a social worker and also many who are already qualified.

I wish you loads of luck
