Independent of what from who?

"Neither Penny Thompson, who will represent the College, nor David N Jones, who will represent BASW, has had previous involvement in the discussions."

"SCIE will need to consider if it still wishes the Interim Board to work towards merger with BASW. If it does, it would need to consider setting up an urgent meeting including, and perhaps even led by, other individuals not previously involved in the discussions.  In this way it may be possible to make progress with a possible merger."

Both, however, will have to work within the remits agreed by the 2 bodies and ultimately BASW, especially, will have to have agreement from its (almost horizontal in attitude) members.

I do believe that David Jones will bring total honesty and ethical correctness to the process and BASW (and the College) would need to be very careful in not heeding his advice. I also believe that it is time to re-canvas the attitudes of the 'sceptics' because they are the ones with the most energy to either support or seek to negate what is eventually agreed. Unless the SCIE College can convince the profession as a whole of its worth then it will never achieve the majority membership of all registered social workers.

Well if Penny's wagon isn't hitched to the government train I'll eat my caboose.

You don't get to be C.E. of GSSC or C.E. of NHS Haringey etc by crassly pointing out the flaws in government policy, appointments, or incompetent instructions for dismissals of SW Directors.

So...is she going to be keen to broker a merger with a BASW who have spoken out strongly against on impact of Government and L.A. policy on Social Work  twice already this year while TCSW have remained silent?

Come on! Even that Royal and Ancient Order College of Nurses, and the BMA has finally taken up meaningful cudgels,  while TCSW reprises one of Simon and Garfunkels greatest hits ( "THe sound of Silence" for those under 60!)

Are they for the government, or are they for the profession of Social Work?

The fact that the two are not always compatible is a glaring reason that the government shouldn't try to own and lead the profession......or the people it screens as "suitable candidates" to lead it, under financial sponsorship, and at "arms length"

So I suppose it is a bit of a "no-win " situation. No merger and its a disgrace to the profession that they couldn't work together.....Merge, and they must have compromised and swallowed "the kings shilling"

But we really need a merger AND integrity! How?

Silence is an excellent strategy until the TCSW board is voted for in Spring and then any 'voice' of TCSW will be that of it's social workers and elected members, I would rather have a headless non existent TCSW CEO, than the headless chicken(s) running amok over the last 363 days.

The deadline for resolution is 01 01 12, lets hope Loof Lirpa does nor rule the day.

Good point....but then to be consistent, they should wait until then before they agree/reject a merger with BASW? Its a chicken and egg situation.

If BASW merges before April, are their 14,000 odd members full members of the college before them...and in control, or do they have to decide individually as members to join, and its only the assets infrastructure and staff that merge?

If their direction is to be determined by members, then who is deciding already to take government roles such as administration of SW education funding for a fee, and opening themselves up to the associated loyalty accusations.

They seem to be happy to pronounce on anything that the government is happy with; "The College says..."etc" always gladly reported by good old CC.

I know..its a connundrum..and I'm tired so not sure who I'm batting for here???Tongue Tied

Sadly, the dish ran away with the (golden) Government spoon with BASW and UNISON chasing it forlornly.

The 'dish' now needs to eject the 'spoon' and start the whole 'race' again.

You are, for once, absolutely correct 'misery' - delighted that you have at least seen my true genius. Add it to your continuing professional development portfolio.

Social work not being a profession in even the loosest lax terms endemic to your posts, ca,t call my self a professional so no thanks. Also very hurt that you can,t get my name right, or perhaps your understandable arrogance gives you the right to name us lesser mortals as you fit. Rupie Molesworth fits if we can all play the game.

I can't be bothered with most of these forums  but I do think that having worked with people with OCD extensively, using a diagnosis as an insult is something that should be above a social work forum.

Sounds indistiguishable from a diagnostic observation to me. I think you are illustrating the way that some diagnoses are now unpronouncable because they have been hijacked by the insulters.  I soon won't be able to be "bi-polar" any more, no matter whether I explore both frozen  geographic extemities, or not!!
