BASW ditches plan for joint membership scheme with Unison
2010-02-26
""We were looking at a joint membership that would give people £100 off, [full fee = £213] but we couldn't arrive at a figure that was satisfactory to both parties," he said."

Fast forward to 2011 and a similar 50/50% is represented as a 'closed shop' by a Conservative MP:

"Helga Pile: The assumptions that are being worked on at the moment are to have a roughly 50/50 split, but as I say, that has not been through our governance processes yet so it is still to be finalised. The existing members of Unison are going to pay £60 to the College. "

Should BASW forge closer links with a union?

Just wondering if there is another party in the Government/College /Unison alliance?

I read BASW criticisms of Community Care "bias" in reporting, and I can see what they mean, but didn't want to be too subjective.

However, I just hit on another conspiracy theory;

Community Care has just stopped producing a hard copy magazine.

Community Care has a partnership with Unison in part of its website and venture

The College of Social Work has promised to produce a magazine/Journal ( just like BASWs) and don't appear to have the logistics in place for that yet despite it's first copy being due in 8 weeks time if the College launches on 1st January.

Community Care has the printing infrastructure and capacity and staff, which are no longer going to be utilised after the last hard copy of Community Care.

Has The College  had an ongoing deal with Community Care to produce the College Magazine? ..In which case printing stories showing the College in a bad light and jeapordising their start date and partnership would jeopordise Community Care's business plan for the next twelve months as well.

Is it a coincidence that CC stops it hard copy issues the month before the college starts?

Is it coincidence that if BASW and the College had merged before the College Launch, the integration of BASWs magazine editorial staff and publishing functions would be hard to avoid, and foul up any (hypothetical) deal with Community Care?

Surely I must be dreaming? Of course there is no "old boys" network carving up the world against the small guy!! Hush my mouth!

And watch this space????

I think The College put out tenders for College Journals and Magazines, as well as tenders for research on a membership magazine. CommuityCare is part of massive Corporation Reed, so is not short of a few pennies. Many newspapers are highly reliant upon an online presence as much as or more than physical copy IE Guardian and newspapers likes the Independent and the Times are running at a loss, which has led to pay-to-view models.

CommunityCare revenue is mostly going to come from advertising and particularly it's Job section, so in terms of Editorial policy I would imagine keeping advertisers sweet is key.

Many people no longer bother with Newspapers, save for those freebies, I think ComCare is just reflecting the trend away from Printed Media, online stuff allows and Publisher to track and monitor it's users and more easily monetize services, this follows business model in the Social Media IE: Free but gets revenue via advertising and the selling of user data.

Top 10 Contributor

Hmm, OK...ishSad.

I'm not sure that Reid does that well in the current economic climate, and adverising revenue is one of the first things that goes in a recession, especially in the public and voluntary sector.

Any idea when the tenders for magazine went out ?

I imagine that ( assuming for a minute the master 100% Unison members plan had gone ahead fine and worked) 40,000-plus hard copies of a full colour magazine every month would be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, even for Reid, in this climate?

But I don't want to be dogmatic, so I suppose time will reveal all?

Top 10 Contributor

" be the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,"   ......OK..a bit of an exageration....but...EmbarrassedBig Smile

REED is enormous and print media advertsing has gone down, more money now spent for online advertising than ever before. REED UK is also a massive Recruitment Agency.

One example of a REED company

The world's leading events organiser, with 2,400 employees in 37 offices serving 52 industries worldwide
http://www.reedbusiness.com/global/index.asp?layout=gbl_inside&articleid=CA298594

Magazine Journal tendering was months ago via TCSW, as with lots of opportunities I am sure BASW submitted tender applications...

Top 10 Contributor

Ok I concede! So Reid is no more dependent upon that contract than Unison is on the relative handful of members ( compared to its overall size) that the college allliance will bring.

Lots of emotion about though.....must be altruistic passion !

( like ours?Wink

Top 10 Contributor

I can't resist it!... Someone just said that Reid is big because it is ruthless and chops titles that can't do more than "wash their face" it doesn't carry or subsidise them.

So I suppose the position is more the viability of CC alone than the group which owns it...?

Now...I must to work!!

Top 10 Contributor

Reed are much better than Reid.

PUBLICATION OF CORRESPONDENCE

THE COLLEGE OF SOCIAL WORK

The Education Committee is today publishing its correspondence with the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families, Tim Loughton MP, relating to the new College of Social Work.

The Committee took oral evidence on the College on 8 November and wrote to the Minister immediately following the session to raise some concerns about the development and reputation of the College. The Minister’s response is published today, along with the Committee’s letter.

The correspondence can be read on the Committee’s website alongside the written evidence submitted for the hearing, at: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201012/cmselect/cmeduc/writev/1630/1630.pdf

From the evidence Helga Pile gave to the select committee Unison at best are expecting no more than 10,000 joining in first year. Clearly not all BASW members would want to join again at most 10,000. Both organisations are needed for TCSW to be viableonce the governments 5 million runs out. It is essential that it attracts social workers from other unions and those who do not belong to unions or BASW. There must be a fairer way of setting membership fees than currently set out in the MOU with Unison.

Yes the fees are an interesting curiosity, especially when considered against BASW previous failed attempt at a very similar deal with UNISON.

So if the fees issues are satisfied to BASW liking does that mean that they then do not care about the lack of Tendering for £5 million, but will be just glad to share the Pie. or is ethics and principles relative  to outcome aka Ends justify means?

I look forward to reading more on BASW's Judicial Review threat, as I have more faith in the Judiciary than all of the vested interests being played out.

Seems like BASWs response to requests to keep matters Private, was to announce the Judicial Review threat, after the joyous Select Committee meeting.
