Hiya,
I thinking of having children and have been wondering how long you can be away from social work without needing to retrain? I can't seem to find a clear answer on the internet.
Thanks
Beckie
Just bumping this as I think it's a good question, and hopefully someone might come along who can give you answers.
I think the short answer is three years ( I maybe wrong) but I say this because currently every three years you have to renew your registration with the GSCC as a qualified social worker and to do this you have to evidence that you have practised as a social worker. You may want to visit their website or give them a ring for a more informed answer.
Do you mean re-train as in the whole course? Other professions such as nursing/teaching have return to practice courses. I don't know if sw does a return to practice course but I don't think I'd be too enthusiastic about re-doing the entire degree !!!!!!
I have looked at the GSCC website and find the subject a bit confusing. I think that in order to renew your GSCC membership you have to complete 15 days of learning/ training in social work, so perhaps if you are out of the profession for more than 3 years and therefore unable to complete this then thats when you might have to do extra training?
Has anyone been out of social work and know more about this?
So long as you complete the required training you should be fine. You do not need to be in employment to train you can attend single modules at uni that would cover it as would college courses, seminars, conferences etc.
