Children of alcohol misusing parents - the ultimate cinderellas?

A report out last week from charities Alcohol Concern and the Princess Royal Trust for Carers laid out the grim realities for children of alcohol misusing parents.

It seems every government policy framework passes them by. They're not a big priority in Every Child Matters, so the report claims, while the Hidden Harm agenda - designed to tackle parental substance misuse and its impact on children - focuses on drugs rather than alcohol. And alcohol policy focuses on the drinker rather than their families.

The results are being forced into caring roles, being at higher risk of getting involved in antisocial behaviour and, of course, massive emotional problems and difficulties at school.

Does anyone know of areas that are getting it right on children of alcohol misusing parents - despite the policies?

Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. How much more negligent can a mother be? If alcohol is such a problem when pregnant what makes professionals think it wont be after the child is born? Premature, underweight, underdeveloped,?mental retardation, failure to reach milestones ? I fully appreciate the difficulties involved in overcoming an obsession with alcohol but how can we continue to permit childrens lives to be blighted by this addiction?
