Hi all,

I've just got a BlackBerry Torch for personal use, having used an iPhone for the last 2 years or so. I could access both CareSpace and Community Care on the iPhone no problem, but can only get CareSpace to work properly on the BlackBerry. My browser shows a Community Care "Page Not Found" message whenever I try to read articles, which I quite like to do on my commute. I wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem to this, and if so, if they know how I might be able to resolve it please.

Cheers,

Jellybean

Hi Jellybean

I didn't know about this - I shall ask a few questions here and see if anyone knows what the problem is.

"...but can only get CareSpace to work properly on the BlackBerry.

Carespace requires Flash to operate properly, Apple/iPhone refuses to allow Flash to be installed on any of it's operating systems/phones, Apple operates a 'walled garden' commercial model, so users are force fed apps/software it 'approves'. The Free, Open-source, Apps/Software agnostic Android multi-form system seems to surpassing at least Apple's iPhone.

If I go onto the communitycare website to look at articles, if I am lucky enough that my blackberry lets me onto the site, I can be sure that whichever article I click... it will say 'Page could not be found'.

Getting onto the forums to read is a nightmare. My blackberry just says unable to open or something. Occasionally it will work, but even then I will probs only be able to go onto one thread before it starts saying unable to open on the others.

IPhone and Blackberry use proprietary technology, switch to Android or dare I say a Windows based phone, as they allow for web browsers that are more standards based. That said ComCare should have tested it's website under Mobile phone access conditions, as some are very popular and the internet is being accessed more and more via mobiles or mobile broadband...

With wishing to appear too much of a geek, the key word is interoperability, lots of the popular mobile phones and  likes of iPad are technically more of a fashion fad, that a technical means to share and access information that the user wants control over. Even devices like Kindle, that can hold a book the purchaser thinks they own is a fallacy, as they only have a license to read it and the company can delete the book at will...

Brave new world

I find it strange with BlackBerrys being quite common in business use, and with some councils providing their frontline workers with BlackBerrys (sadly not the one I work for!) that the Community Care website wouldn't be fully compatible with them, especially when my iPhone was even despite not having Flash. However, I accept your point JoSoPhine that my particular BlackBerry model is one that is quite new and more of a "fashion fad" so to speak - what can I say, I like shiny things that are fun to play with! - so that might explain the lack of compatibility. It'd be great if Simeon or someone on the CommCare staff knew how to fix my problem, but for now I'll have to stick to reading articles on my PC :(

Now an employer giving you a mobile phone and a trendy one at that seems such a positive thing, think again. It just means you are completely tied to your employer by email and text and voice calls, for who's benefit?

And I don't think they would want a 'Company' phone being used for accessing the internet and running up a big data use bill.

And if the phone belongs to your employer then anything you do with it on a personal basis could be being stored by your employer for later retrieval, Big Brother paranoia.... How many employees switch off their employers phone when the shift ends, do you accept calls on it outside your normal shift and when your are enjoying your time. To illustrate my point, when you next use he word time change it to life and think about things again.

I wish I had more time life

I don't have the time life to help

My boss wants more of my time life

Like a slave we let the phone interrupt some of out more precious and tender moments, switch it off and enjoy your life.

etc

Not forgetting GPS location of 'your' device....

There are legal requirements to make websites accessible on disability grounds, but I don't think anyone can make that apply to a 2 by 2 inch screen...

Hi everyone - I don't know why Blackberries don't work on our site - I shall have to speak to our tech people and get back to you.

Hello everyone

We've had this advice from our technical people for something you can try on your Blackberry:

Browser options
Change display options for web pages
1. In the browser, press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
3. Click Browser Configuration.
4. Perform any of the following actions:
• To view background images, select the Use Background Images check box.
• To change the browsing experience, change the Browser Identification field.
5. Press the Menu key.
6. Click Save Options.

I am told that if you can install Explorer, Firefox or Opera Mini on your Blackberry - they can all view the site ok.

We are still looking into if there is anything else we can do.
