This is to let all London based students know about a free student social work conference we are planning for Wednesday 18th November at London South Bank University. The event is organised by students of our own initiative. I am posting this now so people can express interest in attending and keep the date free in their diaries.
The title of the event is ‘Neo-Liberalism vs Social Justice - can I practise the social work I believe in within the statutory sector?’
We intend to discuss the following questions/areas:
- How can we work in statutory roles with managerial objectives, whilst upholding fundamental social work values and beliefs?
- Debating and challenging the application of government policies in statutory sector.
- How will social work of the future affect potential service users?
I should add that we are yet to finalise speakers and structure of the day, but we are confident the event will go ahead.
This is a free one-day conference by students, for students. It is not a commercial venture in any way. Please drop me an email – mortond@lsbu.ac.uk - if you think this may interest you, or reply to the thread. I can then send you further details when more detail is available.
A big hello to everyone who has contacted me or shown an interest in this event. We have been busy planning, and to make sure we have the strongest event possible, the conference will now be taking place on Wednesday 17th February next year (2010). This is a unique opportunity for students to unite and debate their future practice and will be really exciting to boot! The conference will include keynote addresses, a panel discussion and workshops to discuss and analyse these areas. There are contributions from a Director of Social Services, an academic, a senior practitioner and two service users. The workshops will also integrate academic approaches, practical guides and service user perspectives on how to practise ethical social work in a changing environment. Please contact me via the email address above to obtain further information or register for a place.
