    Here comes Boris

Quite a few Londoner are still in shock that Boris is now the mayor - what do people expect of him? Its had loads of media coverage but does anyone outside of London actually care?

I'm disappointed Boris won - ok, I'll admit I was shouting at my tv in shock! - but I think the real test is if he's able to rise above the bumbling buffoon image he has created (and I think it is, inpart, very much a creation - some people like a jolly, upper-class twit) and actually serve London in the way it deserves. I'm hoping for all our sakes that he can but only time will tell...

    Re: Here comes Boris

I shudder to think of this overprivileged Etonian t**t running the city where I live, being in charge of a whopping £11bn (cripes!). I cried when I realised he had won. As a londoner born and bred he is an insult to London. I am outraged at the Evening Standard's coverage of the whole mayoral campaign, which scrutinised Ken and his cronies but unequivocally supported Boris and basically ignored all the other candidates --- however now I feel slightly better that I have discovered that Boris might get the kind of scrutiny he needs via the web - check out Boris Watchers and the excellent Tory Troll for broader Tory-bashing. No Londoner can rely on the pathetic right-wing loo roll The Evening Standard (or The Evening Boris, as one blogger put it) for anything like balanced coverage of the most powerful politician in the UK.

Boot camps are coming back, according to Boris, read here

A youth worker friend of mine was predicting Boris would crack down hard on youth crime, and alienate more young people in the capital in the process...causing more problems - would be interested to see if this will happen

Having read the story - the "boot camps" sound like wishful thinking on the part of the Telegraph - more like activity weekends really.

What is interesting is Boris's logic in proposing to set up a load of new boxing clubs: "so young people can learn how to defend themselves without turning to weapons."

While boxing clubs for boxing clubs sake are perfectly fine seeing them as a way to stop young peope using guns or knives is ridiculous. Children will just end up beating each other up rather than stabbing each other. Is there actually that much difference?

I think Boris misses the point. Now there's a surprise.

Are kids killing each other simply because they have nowhere to let off teenage steam? I don't think so.

Yes, Boris is missing the point. Boot camps and boxing aren't solely going to solve the massive problem with have with knife and gun crime among young people. However, providing them with, dare I say it, potentially fun activities is going to help their self-esteem and confidence (although I'm a bit concerned about the boxing and Boris's view that it'll help young people defend themselves without having to resort to violence. Err... boxing is violent).

One move I do agree with - and please don't make me defend Bor-***! - is his decision to ban alcohol on public transport. Hooray! What a great idea. I loathe getting the tube home late at night and facing a carriage full of beer-swilling folk. Of course, the difficulty maybe in enforcing the ban. Hopefully people will take adhere to it like they did with the no smoking ban.

Boris should send all young delinquents to Eton, then they can rule the country (dont get me started)

Aimes: yes, there's a lot of difference between boxing and stabbing each other to death. Not quite sure where you are going with that one! As a Londoner I don't want Boris to fail although I certainly didn't vote for him. But I sense some people want him to live up to their low expectations even if it means making London a worse place to live. It could be time to move on and hope for the best!

    Re: Here comes Boris

Hi sorry I am not a Londoner so therefore I suppose my views dont really count. However, I know he comes across as a bit of a prat but give him a try. It could be alot worse it could ber good old Ken. Boris might surprise you all and to be frank are you not all being a bit judgemental considering what most of us do for a living. I am sure we have colleagues who are genms but who are a bit wacky?

Lins: Of course your views count, it doesn't matter that you don't live in London. Yes, I agree that we should all "give him a try". No-one really wants Boris to fail, there is too much at stake for those who live and work here for this to happen. However, as Muriel wrote two days ago, he is in charge of a huge budget (£11bn) and I want the person responsible for that to be entirely capable and committed to what they are doing.

Just because some of us are journalists doesn't mean we aren't allowed to comment on, or make judgements about, what our politicians do in our name. This is a critical part of our job, and it's what our readers expect of us.

And yes, I've worked with a few 'wacky' people in my time (and may even *cough* include myself in that description). But they weren't running London.

I'm thinking of getting one of these.
