As everyone will know, Japan is battling to deal with its most powerful earthquake since records began, and the resulting tsunami, with thousands of people killed and hundreds of thousands made homeless.

We would be keen to learn of any British social workers who have either flown to the regions hit by the disaster to provide assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake, or are already based in that country?

Disaster management is an emerging area of social work practice, and social workers have a role to play in domestic incidents too - I wonder if anyone has been involved in emergency planning with your current employer, or indeed real-life emergencies in the UK?

I know I've written about this a few times and don't want to bore people but I was one of the social workers 'volunteered' to work in the Family Assistance Centre in the days after the 7/7 transport bombings in London. Various local authorities across London were asked to provide social workers and the support was overseen by the 'host' authority. I learnt a lot personally but also professionally about the systems in place following a major disaster.
