Hi I am a student undertaking my 3rd year at Uni. I am currently preparing for my dissertation. The topic I have chosen to research is;

Are people with learning disabilities appropriately prepared for independant living by social care professionals?

I would really appreciate your guidance around what questions I should ask

My aims are to asscertain the views of people with learning disabilties on;

  • how prepared they felt for independent living.
  • how their choices were promoted by social care professionals.
  • level of support received from social care professionals

Hi there,

I'm also writing about people with learning disabilities for my dissertation. I have been working with people in supported living for 7 years and am now on final placement on learning disability team. I don't think the issues are to do with whether social care professionals prepare them well for independent living, but whether society in general (and individual communities) are actually well prepared. Of course we'd all love to imagine communities looking out for people with LD and being good neighbours, but sadly this often is not the case. You may have seen the disability hate crime documentary that was on channel 4 the other day? These are not isolated cases and a few cases, mainly where people have died, are now making news headlines. Just a thought for you to consider, hope you do not take it the wrong way! :)

No your right. Society can be so cruel and unjust. However my dissertation is not on public perception, I am holding a focus group with people with Learning disabilities, and was thinking along the lines of how individuals are prepared for managing more independently (budgeting and managaing finances shopping etc) following long stay residential care.

I have seen cases whereby individuals have found living independent a struggle after being in residential care and did not feel prepared for this transition. in light of such I have seen cases wherey some have wished to return back to residential, which is a shame as their experiences may have been different if better prepared. However this is not the case for all which is why I want to ascertain a few experiences around their transition.

To be honest i don't think i have been that clear in my question, which is why I was hoping to get a few idea's ... If you have any more suggestions feel free to comment. What are you doing yours on? and good luck :-)
